Google Launches WiFi Passport, Provides Free or Affordable Wi-Fi in Jakarta

If you're visiting the Indonesian city of Jakarta anytime soon, you might be pleased to know that Google has recently launched its Google WiFi Passport service there. This service provides fast and affordable wireless online access to locals or even tourists, and is a collaboration with MOGPlay (Indomog, an online payment solutions provider).

According to Google, the Wi-Fi connection provided at these hotspots scattered across Jakarta, is faster than the congested local 3G network. Unfortunately, this service is only available for Android users and official Android devices (smartphones and tablets running Android 2.2 Froyo and above)

Using it is easy, as all users have to do is download and install the WiFi Passport application onto their Android devices, log in to their Google accounts, and activate the service using a voucher from an official Wi-Fi Passport event or participating stores which carry Indomog vouchers, and they'll be ready for online access.

After being connected, users will get to be online for the next 24 hours as long as they're within a Wi-Fi hotspot. Once the 24 hours is up, just get into any hotspot, and click "connect" in the app to get connected for another 24 hours. It's not unlimited usage, but users get to use up 3GB worth of data in a day, 7GB in seven days or 10GB in 30 days.

Users can get 10 days of free service from any official WiFi Passport event, or they can choose to pay 20,000 Indonesia Rupiah (approximately S$2.20) for 20 days of service, and $50,000 Indonesian Rupiah (approximately S$5.60) for 50 days of service.

Any unused Wi-Fi time will expire 60 days from when a voucher was redeemed, while users can only have a maximum of 60 days of Wi-Fi time in their balance at any given time. Any additional Wi-Fi time added when service time is at its maximum, will be deactivated for later use, while promotional vouchers must be used by their expiry dates.
