Google Confirms it Acquired Smart Watch Maker WIMM Labs

In 2012, WIMM Labs abruptly stopped sales of its WIMM One developer kit smart watches and said that it was entering into an exclusive and confidential relationship with an unnamed company. Now, it is clear that this company is Google.

Google has just confirmed that it did indeed acquire WIMM Labs. That aside, details of the deals have been scarce, although it is reported that staff from WIMM Labs are now working closely with the Android team. This lends further traction to rumors that Google intends to build its own smart watch to rivals Samsung's and Sony's.

Alternatively, WIMM Labs could be tasked to develop a special version of Android just for wrist watches, with reports commenting that "Given the amount of interest in smartwatches from OEMs big and small, that could be the better strategy for long-term platform growth."
