Google, as well as YouTube, has announced a new virtual reality video format called VR180.

VR180 videos are basically your standard 360-degree video. Google says this makes sense because 75% of people who click on a 360-degree video only look at the quadrant in front of them when the video starts.

But more importantly, VR180 will make it easier for people to start creating and consuming virtual reality content.

360-degree cameras are still rather pricey, and so are virtual reality headsets and systems powerful enough to confidently play virtual content. Chopping 360-degree videos in half will significantly reduce these problems.

VR180 videos will support high resolution playback and Google says they will look great even on standard desktops and mobile. And with compatible headsets like the Daydream, Cardboard, and PSVR, they will transition seamlessly into 3D stereoscopic videos.

For content creators, VR180 means they can setup and film videos using traditional methods and cameras. And soon, they will be able to edit these videos using conventional apps like Adobe Premiere Pro.

You can get a taste of VR180 videos from YouTube here.

Google also announced that its Daydream division will be working with other companies like Lenovo, LG, and Yi Technology to build VR180-capable cameras.
