Google Acquires Over 1000 Patents from IBM

Google recently acquired 1,023 patents from International Business Machines Corp (IBM) to build up its patent portfolio.

According to Bloomberg, records from the U.S Patent and Trademark Office's website showed that Google purchased the patents on August 17. Jim Prosser, a spokesman for Google, confirmed the transaction today without providing more information.

If we take into account the estimated 17,000 patents from its acquisition of Motorola Mobility, Google will soon have a huge portfolio of patents to defend the Android platform and its partners from competitors. We have seen how Google supported HTC with nine patents against Apple and it is likely to see it doing the same for Samsung, which seems to be losing ground to Apple in the on-going lawsuit battle.
