Is Google about to build its own VR hardware?

Some interesting job openings have recently opened up at Google, ones that suggest that Google is ready to move past its Cardboard initiative and start building its own dedicated consumer VR hardware.

A handful of consumer-focused VR jobs are up for grabs at Google, including a Hardware Engineering Technical Lead Manager, Consumer HardwareEngineering Project Specialist, Consumer Hardware, Electrical Hardware Engineer, Consumer Hardware, and PCB Layout Engineer, Consumer Hardware. According to Road to VR, at one point, all of these titles ended with "Virtual Reality," although the current job listing is now the more vague, "Consumer Hardware." In total, the company is currently listing 17 full-time job openings specific to virtual reality.

The Lead Manager position includes the following description: "Our consumer hardware team is working on revolutionizing how people interact with their hardware and looking for engineers to make that a reality. We want to open new ways to interact with devices and create a natural, seamless interface the world's information."

The new job openings coincide with last week's news that Clay Bavor, who was previously responsible for consumer web services including Gmail and Google Docs, has been promoted to Google’s first VP of Virtual Reality.

Of course, there's no guarantee that Google will be building a headset to challenge the likes of Samsung's Gear VR but it's definitely got something big planned. Look out for an announcement at Google I/O 2016 in May.
