Gmail Gets Desktop Notifications via HTML5

The sight of an incoming mail that pops up via a notification is always a nifty feature to have if you are waiting for that important email. While there's been extensions available to include such email notifications, Google has finally used the power of HTML5 to provide a native notification feature to your Gmail account.

Download Squad - Google has just flipped the switch on a new feature in Gmail: desktop notifications for new email and instant messages. It only works in Google Chrome at the moment, but Google plans to bring it to other browsers that support HTML5, like Firefox 4 and Internet Explorer 9.

As stated above, the email notification is now currently available for Chrome users only. Google is planning to bring it to other browsers with HTML5 support, thus including Firefox 4 and Internet Explorer 9 as likely browsers to receive this update. In the meantime, check out the full story here.
