Gigabyte's Shows Brix Mini-PC at Computex 2013

Based on the Intel NUC concept, the Gigabyte Brix improves on two critical areas: size and performance.

Intel recently introduced their Next Unit of Computing (NUC) devices and we reviewed the Intel NUC Mini-PC (DC3127BY) earlier this in February. We found the super compact Mini-PC to be adequate for everyday computing tasks such as word processing, web browsing and watching videos.

Additionally, Intel has also just announced that it will be expanding its NUC line-up of devices with new systems equipped with the latest fourth generation Core processors. However, these new devices will only be released in the third quarter this year.

In between now and then, users can look forward to the Gigabyte Brix. Based on the NUC concept, the Brix is even more compact than the NUC Mini-PC that we reviewed, though only by a slight margin. More importantly, it will have a more powerful Core i7-3537U processor.

The front panel features a lone USB 3.0 port.

Behind, there's a HDMI port, mini-Display port, Ethernet jack, another USB 3.0 port and a DC-in jack.

Inside, it's not that different from the Intel NUC Mini-PC that we reviewed. Two SO-DIMM slots for memory and slots for a mSATA SSD drive and wireless card.

The Core i7-3537U has the same 17W TDP as the Core i3-3217U found in the Intel NUC Mini-PC, but has higher clock speeds (2.0GHz vs. 1.8GHz), Intel Turbo Boost and a larger 4MB cache. In addition, its integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU has a higher max frequency (1.2GHZ vs. 1.05GHz). All these should mean an appreciable boost in performance.

Gigabyte will also offer the Brix with AMD’s new Kabini APUs, and later this year with the new Intel fourth generation Core processors.
