Get reach quick with Canon's new high zoom compact cameras

Canon has just announced two additions to their PowerShot line-up of high zoom compact cameras – the PowerShot SX520 HS and the PowerShot SX400 IS. Built with travel and sports photographers in mind, both cameras feature Canon’s ZoomPlus technology, which digitally extends the camera’s zoom reach to double of the optical rating with no loss in image quality.

The 16.0 megapixel PowerShot SX520 HS has a powerful 24-1008 mm (35mm equivalent) 42x optical zoom lens (extendable to 84x), and Advanced Zoom Framing Assist, which is an improvement from the Zoom Framing Assist found in its predecessor. This offers advanced tracking and focus in two ways: Seek Assist and Auto Zoom.

Seek Assist helps you search for your subject when it leaves your frame by zooming out till it finds your subject, then zooming back to the same level when your subject is located. Auto Zoom function on the other hand, automatically adjusts your zoom level to maintain the size and focus of your subject as it moves closer or further from your camera. More detection options are also available this time, with a choice of face, upper body, whole body or manual.

Designed with a mode dial similar those on Canon’s EOS DSLRs, the PowerShot SX520 HS has Canon’s intelligent IS to reduce blur, and has been designed to offer comfortable and secure grip. Meanwhile, a DIGIC 4+ image processor and 16 megapixel 1/ 2.3” CMOS sensor combine to offer rapid autofocus and quick start-up times.

The PowerShot SX520 HS will be available at all major authorised retailers for S$419 in September.

The PowerShot SX400 IS on the other hand, features a 24-720mm (35mm equivalent) 30x optical zoom, again extendable to 60x with Canon’s ZoomPlus technology. It too comes with Canon’s IS technology to reduce blur from shaky hands, and boasts rapid autofocus speeds as well as quick start-up times thanks to the Digic 4+ processor. Unlike the SX520 HS, the SX400 IS features a 16 megapixel CCD sensor, and is capable of recording video in HD resolution at a frame rate of 25p.

The PowerShot SX400 IS will be available at all major authorized retailers for S$249 from August 2014.
