If you wolfed down your meal last night thinking that that was just one take-out too many, Genie will appear like a veritable godsend. Developed by Israeli entrepreneurs Ayelet Carasso and Doron Marco from White Innovation, the device might just prove to be your own personal genie, sent from above to fulfill all your gustatory desires.

Genie food pods come in 140g portions in recyclable containers that are placed inside the device. What follows is some serious bit of culinary wizardry – Genie supposedly mixes, shakes and adds any required liquids from tubes attached to the back of the machine to produce a freshly baked dish in 30 seconds. It even sets the temperature so your dish is cooked with just the right amount of heat.

The company says that its pods contain all-natural ingredients that are freeze-dried and have a shelf-life of between one and two years. If the whole thing sounds like something straight out of science fiction (seriously, food pods?), you won’t be surprised to learn that Carasso and Marco have likened Genie to a real-life version of Star Trek’s ‘replicators’, devices which can synthesize meals on demand.

But we may be getting ahead of ourselves here. The team behind Genie says that it isn’t intended to replace meals at a restaurant. Instead, they hope it will challenge chefs to prepare a good meal in a pod-sized container.

What’s interesting is that Genie food pods can be tailored to specific diets, good news for those with gluten, dairy or other dietary restrictions. There’s even talk of developing product lines for well-known culinary personalities.

Genie also comes with a mobile app that you can use to tell it to begin working its magic. The Genie team is currently working on expanding the capabilities of the mobile app and hope that it will be better able to cater to individual users in the future.

According to Marco, Genie will eventually understand the microbiome of your gut and prepare the pod just for you. Science fiction? Maybe not. Genie is expected to cost several hundred US dollars and could help restaurants reduce costs, provide soldiers with more palatable meals, and even facilitate better food distribution in less developed parts of the world.
