Galaxy S8+ rated as the top smartphone by Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports (CR), a nonprofit organization dedicated to unbiased product testing in the U.S, revealed its latest smartphone rankings where four of the top five spots are taken by Android smartphones.

Leading the pack is the Samsung Galaxy S8+, followed by the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S7 edge, LG G6 and the Apple iPhone 7 Plus. The bezel-less design, great battery life and top-notch camera are cited as the reasons for the Galaxy S8+ taking the top spot.

CR states that the Galaxy S8+ and S8 sport a minimalist, modern and elegant design which provide a comfortable feel in the hands although one-handed operation is difficult due to the tall, narrow display.

CR - "Even on the smaller model, it will be hard for most users to reach the upper regions of the screen with their thumb," lead phone tester Richard Fisco says.

Despite not having a dual-camera setup, CR believes the Galaxy S8 phones have the best cameras in the market as "the colors are rich and the low-light performance admirable". There is also less over-sharpening by the cameras of the Galaxy S8.

CR - "Finally, a few top-end cameras, including the iPhone 7 Plus and the LG G6, have dual rear-facing cameras, to enhance either zoom or wide-angle photography. The Samsung phones haven't gone that route yet—and we don't think they suffer for it."

The Galaxy S8+ and S8 received some demerit points for the awkward placement of the fingerprint sensor. While it works well, CR said that they kept poking around the rear to locate the fingerprint sensor and ended up smudging the camera lens most of the time.
