Galaxy S8 to ditch 3.5mm headphone jack, home button and PenTile display?

SamMobile appears to have obtained exclusive information on the specs of the Samsung Galaxy S8.

According to its sources, the 3.5mm headphone jack will be replaced by a USB Type-C port on the Galaxy S8. This means that consumers have to use a USB Type-C adaptor if they want to continue using their current wired headphones. It also means that you cannot charge the phone at the same time unless you go wireless.

The removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack is said to help Samsung achieve a thinner design for the Galaxy S8 while maximizing space for a bigger battery. Apple, Lenovo Moto Z phones and the USB Implementers Forum have ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack standard, so we are not surprised to see Samsung taking the same path for the Galaxy S8.

The extra space could also be used to integrate Harman stereo speakers , which Samsung has access to after acquiring the audio company for US$8 billion. The USB Type-C port for the Galaxy S8 will support quicker charging, faster data transfer and the recently released Gear VR headset.

As for the display, Samsung is reportedly retaining the 2K display for the Galaxy S8 as a higher resolution display is more expensive and consumes more power. What's interesting is that the Galaxy S8 may sport a new Super AMOLED display with the standard RGB arrangement instead of the current Diamond PenTile layout found in the Galaxy S7 edge.

The RGB arrangement will boost the user experience in VR, a feature which is rumored to be the secret weapon of the Galaxy S8. It will also have lower power consumption and a longer service life. The physical home button will be eliminated with the fingerprint sensor embedded within the display, making the Galaxy S8 the first handset to have optical fingerprint identification. This is similar to earlier reports of a "full-screen" Galaxy S8 with a high screen-to-body ratio.

Other rumored specs of the Galaxy S8 include a front-facing camera with autofocus, a dual-camera module, 6GB RAM, storage options up to 256GB, a pressure-sensitive display and a new AI assistant. The upcoming flagship phone could be announced at Mobile World Congress 2017 in late February with retail availability in March.
