Apple's patent application for a multi-camera optical zoom system last year gives credence to reports that a future iPhone model may come with a dual-camera setup.

According to the description in the patent application, two cameras with different focal lengths will be used to take two photos simultaneously. The two photos can be combined to create a new image depending on your zoom's preferences. The multi-camera optical zoom system can also be used for video taking; you can take clearer photos during video recording or capturing video in different speeds (timelapse and slow motion).

If all these sound familiar, let us refresh your memory that Apple acquired Israeli camera technology firm LinX last year for US$20 million. LinX specializes in multi-aperture camera technology and its cameras use multiple sensors to capture 2D and 3D images.
