Fstoppers just proved that the iPhone 6s takes better video than a DSLR

Lee Morris from Fstoppers just shot an iPhone 6s comparison video comparing the 4K video quality against their own go-to cameras – the Nikon D750 and the Nikon D810 – by down-sampling the video from the iPhone 6s to 1080p to match the Nikons. Lee used a Nikon D750 with Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 lens at 35mm with the Nikon set to “neutral” to match the iPhone 6s and found that the video from the iPhone 6s was actually much better in terms of details.

As Lee is quick to clarify (multiple times in fact) the point is not to say that the iPhone 6s is a better camera than the Nikon D750, but rather to show that in the right conditions you can take just as good video with a mobile phone as you can with a DSLR. He also makes a valid observation in that new features seem to be coming out mostly in the ultra-high end or the entry-level (with certain features disabled), skipping the mid-range completely. Why is 4K video not a standard in cameras yet?

It’s a little like the argument for shooting in RAW or using a higher-megapixel camera really, filming video at 4K gives the filmmaker more options for post-production as they can “crop” down to 1080p quality, or have more leeway to do things like stabilization and panning or zooming. Not to mention the option of getting higher quality stills from captured footage itself.
