Farewell, Windows RT and Surface 2

Fact number 1: Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system will be free for Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 users during the first year of its release. Windows RT? In a statement to The Verge, the software giant said that while an update is in the works, Windows RT will only get “some of the functionality of Windows 10”. In other words, don’t expect your Surface RT, Surface 2, or any other Windows RT-running tablets to get full Windows 10 come end of this year.

Fact number 2: It has long been rumored that Microsoft intends to stop making its ARM-based Surface tablets. Well, that’s now a reality as the company has told The Verge that it’s no longer manufacturing the Surface 2. This really shouldn’t be a surprise now that we know the Surface Pro 3 outsold the Surface 2 three to one last quarter. In the same statement, Microsoft said those eager to get the Windows RT-running Surface can still find them in the stores; but really, we don’t think you should considering both the OS and hardware are nearing the end of their lives.

Adiós, Windows RT. We hardly knew ye.
