Screensavers displaying a mishmash of photos are hardly anything new or groundbreaking. But what if the software allows you to create instant screensavers for your loved ones using your own images as well? Available now in beta, Familiar is essentially a digital picture frame application which enables users to create screensavers or picture slide-shows for close friends and family.

There are two ways you can go about sharing your Kodak moments. You may either use Familiar's desktop app (available here), or you can employ cloud services such as Flickr, Picasa and Facebook Albums to create the 'social picture frame'. Familiar's co-founder, Marcus Womack, also told TechCrunch that future support for mobile services such as Instagram are already in the works. "With Familiar, we make it simple: your family and closest friends send photos directly to each others’ screen, even if everybody is using a totally different app to take, manage, or share photos", he added.

Users may get to enjoy a mobile version developed for iOS and Android in the near future, according to the co-founder. On top of this, Womack is also hoping to extend Familiar's capabilities, like sharing informative content such as local news and weather updates via the screensavers.
