Facebook Loses US Visitors But Profits Rise

Facebook UK Visitor from Nielsen.

Numbers collected by market research firm Nielsen show that social media supremo Facebook has lost 10 million visitors in the US and has seen no monthly growth in visitors in the UK over the past year. The research also shows a drop in the number of visits Facebook gets from computers, smartphones and tablets from 153 million in March 2012 to 142 million in March 2013.

Facebook itself has stated that it has 1.11 billion active monthly users world wide, which is 23 percent higher than last year. However Nielsen's data points to a stagnation in developed markets. While visitors from home and work computers are dwindling, mobile monthly active users are up 54 percent and are measured at 751 million. With the launch of Facebook Home for Android, you can expect Facebook's mobile user numbers to continue growing.

While user numbers may be going down, Facebook profits have continued to rise on the back of their growth on the mobile platform. Facebook made US$219 million in the first three months of the year, compared to the US$205 million made over the same time period a year ago. At the same time first quarter revenue for 2013 is US$1.46 billion which is higher than the US$1.06 million total revenue from the first quarter of 2012.
