Facebook allows sign up of Messenger for users without a Facebook account

Facebook is clearly not satisfied with having over 700 monthly active users on Mesenger; it wants more people to use its instant messaging service.

Starting today, people in the U.S, Canada, Peru and Venezuela can sign up for Messenger without a Facebook account. For people in these selected countries, they can sign up for Messenger using their mobile numbers. This is part of Facebook's focus on "creating the best messaging experience possible by giving people a fun and easy way to connect and express themselves with friends and contacts".

The latest update to Messenger should bring in new users who have left or avoided Facebook for whatever reasons. However, Facebook still recommends people to sign in with their Facebook accounts as there are many benefits such as easier access to Facebook friends and taking advantage of the multi-device messaging across different devices.

No word yet when this will roll out globally, but we expect it won't be too long before it happens.
