With the launch of the new Sony Ericsson Xperia arc, announced with Google Android 2.3, our attention now falls upon its existing Xperia lineup, including the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. When we asked of Sony Ericsson's update plans for the Xperia series, a Sony Ericsson spokesperson commented with the following statement:
Sony Ericsson is planning another upgrade to bring new features (including multi-touch for Xperia X10) to the current family of Xperia™ smartphones in Q1 2011. However, at this stage those plans do not include updating the underlying Android version.
We believe that, with the current hardware platform, an overhaul of the underlying core Operating System (OS) would not necessarily deliver a drastic improvement in the user experience. Android OS 2.1, coupled with Sony Ericsson’s proprietary upgrades and superior entertainment hardware (8.1 mp camera and HD video recording), delivers a user experience that is at least as good as – and in many cases better than – a vanilla installation of Android 2.2.
Our priority right now is to keep enhancing the user experience of the existing products through coming updates and to deliver a fantastic range of smartphones in 2011 that are all on the latest possible version of Android.
With that out of the way, this manages the expectations of the Xperia X10 users awaiting for an Android 2.2 update. But, with the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc soon to be available in selected markets by Q1 2011, holding out for the new Android 2.3 device might be a wise move.
