The E1 camera is a 4K GoPro killer that does interchangeable lenses

A new company known simply as Z has invented a tiny camera that will do cinema-quality 4K 4096x2160 ultra-high definition video at 24 frames per second or ultra-high definition 3840x2160 video at 30 frames per second with H.264 compression and posted it up on Kickstarter.

Boasting a compact form factor that should offer the portability of GoPro cameras like the recent GoPro Hero4 Session, the E1 camera has Wi-Fi 802.11N and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) support, with an Ambarella A9 image processor that allows the camera to shoot at up to 102,400 ISO while maintaining high image quality up to 6400 ISO. Add to that the ability to natively take Olympus, Panasonic, Leica and Sigma lenses via its Micro Four Thirds mount, and you have a very compelling option for quality videos and photos in a very portable package.

The E1 looks to be small and pocketable.

According to the Kickstarter page, the E1 allows for continuous autofocusing in both photos and video, with different sensitivity settings to ensure that you don’t lose track of your subject while filming. There’s an on-screen zoom preview for crystal-clear focus if you choose to pull focus manually, and the camera can be controlled remotely via a proprietary application that’s already available in both Google Play and Apple’s App Store.

Apparently, you can leave the camera in standby mode and remotely power it on whether it’s powered on or off, and the camera can be plugged into a direct AC power source so it can keep going indefinitely. The camera is supposed to boast ultra-low 200-300 millisecond latency, allowing for easy streaming and seamless content downloads to any Android or iOS device, making it great for covering live events or even shooting documentaries given that the small size gives you plenty of camera placement options.

What’s even better, is perhaps the fact that the E1 is built on the open platform concept, with the SDK made available to developers so you can truly customize the functionality to your needs. The E1 has 352 backers to date and $208,216 of pledges raised with some 24 days left to go on the campaign, so you can still check it out here.
