Microsoft is joining the race to the bottom in the local smartphone market with its Lumia 530, which will be available from August 23 at a retail price of S$159 without line contract and inclusive of GST. It is available at Nokia Stores, Nokia Solution Partners and M1 Shops.

The Lumia 530 is the first Lumia device to be priced below S$200 in Singapore. Previously, the Lumia 635 was the most affordable Lumia model at S$239. As a dual-SIM entry level smartphone, the Lumia 530 boasts basic specs such as a 4-inch (854 x 480 pixels) display and 4GB internal storage.

It runs on Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Cyan and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 quad-core 1.2GHz processor with 512MB RAM. It also has a microSD memory card slot that supports memory cards up to 128GB.

Despite its affordable price tag, the Lumia 530 faces stiff competition in the dual-SIM category from the likes of the ASUS ZenFone 5, HTC Desire 616 and Xiaomi Redmi 1S. If you are looking beyond the Windows Phone camp, these three Android smartphones are worthy of your consideration. Do check out our shootout article where we pit these three models against each other. Generally, a Windows Phone device can live with lesser specs, but it's primarily hampered by it's own app ecosystem.

Fortunately, it's miles ahead of the Nokial XL 'smartphone' that's left high and dry soon after it was launched locally.
