Drivers in the UK must surrender their mobile phones after an accident
According to studies, one of today's leading causes of motor-related accidents is due to drivers using their mobile phones while driving. Efforts have been made to punish drivers who do so, but it is still a big problem in many parts of the world.
In the UK, more than 500 people a year are killed or seriously injured every year because of drivers being distracted by their mobile phones.
As a result, the Association of Chief Police Officers has decided on stricter enforcement. A new ruling has just been issued that will require drivers who are involved in an accident to surrender their phones to the officer at the scene. This is so that it can be checked for evidence to see if the driver has broken the law by allowing him or herself to be distracted by their phones while driving.
Additionally, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin added that the government could also double the penalty for drivers caught texting to six points on their license. McLoughlin also said, "'The amounts of casualties there have been are absolutely appalling and the person who is using their phone doesn't realize the damage or the danger.''
