DisplayPort 1.3 standard finalized, supports 5K displays with its 32.4Gbps bandwidth

VESA has finalized DisplayPort 1.3 for audio and video transmission, and it boasts of a maximum bandwidth of 32.4Gbps. The new standard marks a 50% increment in maximum link bandwidth over the current DisplayPort 1.2a. This is achieved by each of its four lanes operating at “a link rate of 8.1 Gbps per lane.”

Hence, the new standard is able to support 5K displays with a resolution of up to 5120 x 2880 pixels, using only one DisplayPort cable. In addition, the increased bandwidth also spells support for driving a pair of Ultra HD 4K displays, each with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. According to VESA, DisplayPort 1.3 supports video conversion to VGA, DVI, and HDMI is still present on. In addition, HDCP 2.2 and HDMI 2.0 with Consumer Electronic Control (CEC) features have been added so that DisplayPort 1.3 sits well with television applications. Especially with its support 4:2:0 pixel structure, which is commonly used on consumer digital television interfaces, future proofing the DisplayPort 1.3 interface for 8K x 4K displays, which have a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels.

Besides the increment in bandwidth, the new standard adds value to its utility for data transport. Due to its “8.1Gbps per lane link rate”, the DisplayPort 1.3 is able to use two of its four lanes for AV signals, while assigning the remaining two for data transmission, such as SuperSpeed USB data, in accordance to the DockPort standard. DisplayPort is also the AV transport standard used by "Thunderbolt and other wired and wireless multi-function interface standards." The DisplayPort standard is offered to VESA members, royalty-free.
