Despite doubling sales, Xbox One still outsold by PlayStation 4 in June

Ditching the Kinect sensor has improved sales, but it was not enough to beat the competition.

Recently, Microsoft announced that it will no longer make the Kinect sensor compulsory and introduced a new Kinect-less model that was US$100 cheaper, making it the same price as the Sony PlayStation 4.

It proved to be an astute move as sales of the Xbox One console doubled in the month of June. Unfortunately for Microsoft, despite this significant increase in sales, it still finds itself being outsold by Sony's PlayStation 4, indicating that Sony themselves also enjoyed an increase in sales. This is according to numbers obtained by research firm the NPD Group.

However, and perhaps more importantly, comparing the sales figures against those of the last-generation Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 suggests that the new consoles are very well received. NPD analyst Liam Callahan said,"Combined sales of Xbox One and PS4 are over 80 percent higher than the combined totals for Xbox 360 and PS3 - an indication of the strength of the start of this new console generation."
