Dell's new XPS 13 is world's most compact 13-inch notebook

The previous version of the Dell XPS 13 from 2012 was quite a feat of engineering in its day. While it was more compact than an equivalent MacBook Air, it had some limitations when peering at it closely.

Enter the brand new Dell XPS 13 announced today, powered by Intel's latest Core i5/i7 15W Broadwell processor options and is available with Intel vPro platform compliant models for managed business notebook solutions for the corporate environment.

The renewed XPS 13's most eye-catching aspect has got to be its new "UltraSharp Quad HD+ infinity display" - a near borderless 13-inch touchscreen with resolution options that go up to 3,200 x 1,800 pixels. This screen was designed with special collaboration with Sharp and according to Dell, there will be no other notebooks that can sport a similar display for at least another half a year. Its ultra slim 5.2mm bezels are hardly visible, thus giving you an impressive work screen that stretches edge to edge. Words cannot describe this experience - it has to be experienced.

The impressive screen aside, the notebook's design ID has been overhauled so as to shed off the previous iteration's Apple MacBook Air look and feel, which makes the new XPS 13 truly Dell's own creation. While overhauling the design, Dell still kept the carbon fiber composite for the base of the unit to give it strength, while keeping the notebook light. As compact as the previous XPS 13 was, the new version sheds a few more percent in volume and weight.

While the display looks superb, the glossy screen is something to take note.

Yet another view to show the notebook's ultra-thin profile.

Fortunately, the reduced size doesn't compromise on the notebook's battery life; according to Dell, the new XPS 13 boasts 15 hours of run time from a single charge - this outcome is certainly helped by the new Intel Broadwell processors used which are far more power efficient than existing and older mobile computing platforms.

The new Dell XPS 13 goes on sale immediately in the USA, starting from US$800 for the basic configuration. A Quad HD+ display, a fast processor option and more SSD storage will definitely crank up the cost, but that's to be expected.
