Dell is finally putting its Latitude 7285 2-in-1 laptop on sale. The convertible notebook was first announced at CES 2017 with a marquee wireless charging feature, making it the world’s first laptop to ditch the power brick according to Dell.

As a member of Dell’s Latitude series, the 12.3-inch device is meant for business users, although the idea of wireless charging may attract a wider audience.

It starts with the following specifications:

  • 12.3-inch 2,880 x 1,920-pixel anti-glare display
  • Intel Core i5-7Y54 processor (1.2GHz, 4MB L3 cache)
  • 8GB RAM
  • 128GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD
  • 274.8 x 209.2 x 7.25mm
  • 0.68kg

However, there’s a catch, and the wireless charging capabilities aren’t actually built into the tablet’s body. Instead, a detachable keyboard doubles as the wireless charging base, which will then sit on top of Dell’s Wireless Charging Mat.

Both the Wireless Charging Keyboard and Wireless Charging Mat are sold separately. They cost US$379.99 and US$199.99 respectively, but you can also get them together for US$549.99.

Dell is using magnetic resonance technology from a company called WiTricity, and its decision to not use the more widely implemented Qi wireless charging standard means that you won’t be able to use the charging mat to juice up your smartphone.

To further complement the cord-cutting experience, the Latitude 7285 will also work with a WiGig wireless dock, but this costs an additional US$379.99.

The Latitude tablet alone starts at US$1,199, but you’ll need to buy all the extra accessories to enjoy the full experience, which can amount to a rather hefty sum.

Still, it’s possible that professionals who find themselves constantly on the move may be willing to pay more to get rid of the hassle of connecting and then unplugging wires.

Dell also said that it intends to make future systems compatible with the Wireless Charging Mat, so customers will have more options moving forward.

Unfortunately, there’s no news on local price and availability yet, but we’ll update when we know more.
