Another feature teased at the Build Conference when Microsoft unveiled Windows Phone 8.1 way back in April, but which doesn’t come with the update (including the still-rolling-out Lumia Cyan update for Nokia Lumia devices) is this live lockscreen app that allows users to have a, well, more personalized lockscreen.

The app has finally arrived in beta form, and is currently called Live Lock Screen Beta in the Windows Phone Store.

Live Lock Screen Beta app description:

Live lock screen lets you choose from 6 new lock screen layouts to add a distinctive touch to your Windows Phone. Each layout has a revamped design for the time, date, and notifications, as well as a unique unlock animation. You can also cycle through multiple background images throughout the day to keep your lock screen fresh - or just get the latest incredible image from Bing every morning.

As of now, there are only six themes, which isn’t a lot considering the time it took Microsoft (or rather, the developer it worked with for this app). And it’s buggy, having crashed on us a few times; not to mention there’s this delay whenever we turn on the phone (primarily because it's an app, and isn't baked into the OS). (The developer, Rudy Huyn, is aware of all these, by the way.) Nonetheless, it’s a good step forward, and we expect more variety down the road, especially when more developers make use of the new APIs in their apps.
