Corning's new Gorilla Glass 5 is tougher and more resistant to cracks
Corning, the glass maker whose cover glass is used on a great deal of mobile devices, has just unveiled its new Gorilla Glass 5.
This new cover glass is said to be tougher, stronger, and therefore more resistant to cracks and breakages.
Drop performance has been significantly improved. According to Corning, Gorilla Glass 5 will survive drops from 1.6 meters 80% of the time.
In comparison, Gorilla Glass 4 was rated to survive drops from 1 meter, 80% off the time. As you can see, that's a pretty substantial improvement.
In Corning's research, they found that 85% off smartphone users dropped their phones at least once a year. And more than two-thirds of these people dropped their phones from above waist height.
This means that the improved drop performance of Gorilla Glass 5 will have a tremendous benefit on these butterfingered users.
Gorilla Glass 5 is in production now and there's a good chance that we will see it in action on all the new phones that will be launched later this year just ahead of the holiday season.
