Corning’s Project Phire is a new extremely tough and scratch-resistant glass
Corning’s newest toughened glass for mobile devices, Gorilla Glass 4, started appearing on devices, like the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Alpha, around the end of 2014. Despite it still being relatively new, the company has already embarked on a next-gen glass, which according to Cnet, will have ultra scratch-resistance like that of sapphire.
The new material, which goes by the codename ‘Project Phire’, was reportedly shown to investors by Corning executive James Clappin during a meeting in New York recently.
Clappin:
“We told you last year that sapphire was great for scratch performance but didn’t fare well when dropped. So, we created a product that offers the same superior damage resistance and drop performance of Gorilla Glass 4 with scratch resistance that approaches sapphire.”
It’s widely believed that Apple originally intended to ditch Gorilla Glass in favor of sapphire glass made by GT Advanced for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, but the move never materialized, and looks increasingly unlikely after the failed partnership between the two companies. With Project Phire, perhaps Apple’s aim to equip its devices with screens with sapphire-like scratch resistance properties can be realized after all.
