Contrary to your expectations, iPad 2 is the most popular Apple tablet

Just weeks ago, we reported that Apple CEO Tim Cook remained optimistic about tablets growth and called the recent slump in its iPad sales a mere "speed bump". On the other hand, Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly is not so optimistic and said that sales of tablets were "crashing".

According to Localytics, an analytics company, the 3.5 year old iPad 2 remains to be the most popular Apple tablet. Interestingly, it has a 29% share of all iPads out in the wild, far surpassing the iPad Air (12%) and even the fourth generation iPad (15%). The next most popular iPad model is the first generation iPad Mini, which has a 20%. The iPad Mini with Retina Display only made up 5%.

The figures seem to suggest that users are less likely to upgrade to newer tablet models and that the upgrade cycle for tablets is perhaps more similar to traditional computing devices. If this is the case, it would be unlikely that Apple can expect to sustain the sales figures that it has enjoyed in the earlier days of the iPad.

Localytics also revealed that the most popular iPhone model is the iPhone 5, which has 27% share of the iPhone market. The iPhone 5S is second, but only just with a 25% share. Clearly, users are more willing to upgrade to the latest iPhone rather than the iPad. But this is most likely because iPhones are available at lower prices should users decide to lock themselves into a two-year plan with a carrier.
