Coming Soon: Smaller Windows 8 Tablets
Do you know that Microsoft requires its OEM partners who’re making Windows 8 tablets use a screen with a minimum native display resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels? One main reason is that this is the minimum resolution needed for Windows 8’s Snap View feature. But this policy has apparently changed recently, and the Redmond-based company is now allowing Windows 8 devices to be made with a lower-res 1,024 x 768-pixel screen. In fact, in the leaked builds of Windows 8.1 (also known as Windows Blue), the upcoming update to Windows 8, Snap View is now possible on a 1,024 x 768-pixel screen. The educated guess is that these are signs that Microsoft is working on a smaller 7 or 8-inch Surface tablet.
And just a few days ago in its earnings conference call, CFO Peter Klein has confirmed that Microsoft is working with PC OEMs to develop such smaller Windows 8/RT tablets. No further details are given, but it’s very likely they will come to market around the same time as Windows 8.1. The OS update is expected to debut in end June at the Microsoft Build Developer Conference, with RTM to follow at the end of the year.
