Coming Soon: Cross-Platform 3DMark Benchmark

Futuremark, the company responsible for performance benchmarks like PCMark and 3DMark, recently announced the existence of a cross-platform 3DMark benchmark tool. According to Futuremark, this will be the first time users will be able to compare results from machines running different operating systems.

Supported platforms include Windows, Windows RT, iOS, and Android. Futuremark also stressed that the benchmarking tool will assess older and less capable systems based on Microsoft's DirectX 10 (or older) engine. However, DirectX 11 will be used for newer Windows-flavored machines. For Android and iOS devices, 3DMark will employ the OpenGL ES 2.0 API to gather performance scores. Windows RT based devices will be assessed on their DirectX 9 performance using the DX11 software stack.

We're not sure how the use of different engines will affect the final scores for comparing low-end devices as Futuremark could easily have 3DMark run OpenGL ES 2.0 for all low-end machines. But until we get to try it out, it's still too early to tell if Futuremark's cross-platform implementation would turn out to be a successful endeavor or not. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks!
