Coleridge Design to Bring BMR Speaker Technology to the Masses via Kickstarter

Coleridge Design Associates, a tech startup firm based in Silicon Valley, has just introduced its crystal clear aCUBE BMR speakers on Kickstarter. Unique not just for its crystal clear design, the aCUBE speakers are also unusual in that they employ BMR technology.

BMR (Balanced Mode Radiators) is a technology that blends distributed mode loudspeaker (DML) technology with tradition speaker technology. In a nutshell, DML technology produces sounds by inducing vibrations in a panel through exciters. This differs from conventional speaker technology where sound is produced by pistonic motion of a diaphragm. Hence, BMR technology is a fusion of both DML technology and conventional speaker technology, and the end result is a speaker that excels at reproducing the full audio spectrum.

Apart from employing BMR technology, Coleridge Design Associate's aCUBE speakers also have a special crystal clear design thanks to the use of acrylic. Geoff Body, the man behind the speakers, explains that acrylic was chosen because of two reasons. One, acrylic blends nicely into any decor and has the ability to refract light beautifully. Two, acrylic also has very high internal damping, this means unnecessary vibrations are kept to a minimum.

Traditionally, BMR speakers are very costly, but Coleridge Design Associates are determined to keep costs down. A single aCUBE speaker will have a planned RRP of US$180. And users will have the option of adding an additional passive speaker to convert it to a stereo setup for an additional US$120.

If you support this project on Kickstarter now, you could get the an aCUBE BMR stereo setup for US$250. Early birds will also get a free 10-inch acrylic stand. Additionally, the speakers are expected to ship this May.
