A Chinese phone maker has overtaken Apple in global smartphone sales

The latest data from Counterpoint Research has confirmed that Huawei is now the second biggest phone maker in the world, thanks to its strong global smartphone sales in June and July. While August sales seem to be looking good for Huawei, Apple is likely to make a comeback with the launch of new iPhones next week.

“This is a significant milestone for Huawei, the largest Chinese smartphone brand with a growing global presence. It speaks volumes for this primarily network infrastructure vendor on how far it has grown in the consumer mobile handset space in the last three to four years. The global scale Huawei has been able to achieve can be attributed to its consistent investment in R&D and manufacturing, coupled with aggressive marketing and sales channel expansion.” - Counterpoint’s Research Director Peter Richardson

A Chinese phone maker could overtake Apple in global smartphones sales soon

Apple and Samsung have been dominating the global smartphone market for a few years, however that could change soon.

According to the latest market share data by Strategy Analytics, Chinese phone maker Huawei could overtake Apple in smartphone sales in the next few quarters. In Q2 2017, Huawei is estimated to have shipped 38.4 million smartphones which is a 20% increase compared to the same period last year. Apple sold about 41 million phones last quarter. Huawei's market share of close to 10.7% is within striking distance of Apple's 11.4% market share. Samsung is leading both companies by a significant margin; it shipped over 79.5 million phones with a market share of 22.1%.

Woody Oh, Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “Huawei maintained third position with a record 11 percent global smartphone marketshare in Q2 2017, up from 9 percent a year ago. Huawei is now closing in fast on Apple and Apple will be looking nervously over its shoulder in the next few quarters. Huawei is outperforming across Asia, Europe and Africa with popular Android models such as the P10 and Mate 9.”

Huawei recently revealed its new market strategy where it will be giving up on the very low-end devices and focus its efforts on an overseas expansion into more developed market. Huawei's employees are reportedly very loyal to the company and it has been cited as a major reason behind the company's rise in the past few years. Apple not only has to defend itself against Huawei, it also has to watch out for Oppo and Xiaomi as both Chinese companies are ranked 4th and 5th in the global smartphone market.
