Casio Exilim EX-FR10

Casio has just launched a brand new compact digital camera into their Exilim range, the EX-FR10, and it is unlike any camera that they have done before. The EX-FR10 is labeled as a “freestyle camera” with a two-piece modular design that comprises of a main camera module and an LCD-equipped controller. When combined, the EX-FR10 functions like any digital compact, where the lens is pointing outward towards your target and the LCD acts as your viewfinder; this is the basic conventional mode. You can also flip the camera module 180-degrees out so that both the lens and the LCD face you. This mode is obviously made to take selfies.

The new Casio Exilim EX-FR10 in its 'conventional style' where it operates like any digital compact.

Flip out the camera module and you've got a self-facing camera perfect for selfies.

Things start to get interesting when you detach the EX-FR10 into its separate components. The camera module and LCD controller are actually connected via Bluetooth; when detached, the camera module can be placed in any position or angle, greatly extending your shooting options. Besides this remote operation, the camera module can also function independently, snapping photos automatically at preset intervals. The EX-FR10 features built-in Wi-fi to connect and share photos with a smartphone.

Camera module and LCD controller are quickly detached. There's no actual electronic connection on the clip as the two modules actually communicate wirelessly via Bluetooth.

Although not marketed as a rugged action cam, the EX-FR10 is dust-proof equivalent to IP6X standards, splash-proof up to IPX6/IPX7 standards and resistant to drops of up to two meters. It will also come bundled with a full set of accessories, straps and adapters catered to an active lifestyle. These include a Multi-angle Grip and Belt set - for straping the camera to your backpack, arm or forehead - a lanyard and carabiner. You'll also get a tripod adapter and lens hood.

A full accessory package is included in the bundle. Nothing is left as an optional purchase, so you can get started straight away.

Specs-wise, the EX-FR10 features a 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor with an effective 14-megapixel count. It can record movies in Full HD 1080p, though with a file limit of 4GB. It supports SD Card storage, but also features a small 65.9MB built-in flash memory that can be used. Battery life is rated for 255 shots or up to 1 hour and 15 minutes of continuous Full HD video recording. You can check out the full specs in the table below.

The Exilim EX-FR10 will be available in three colors: white, orange and green.

The Exilim EX-FR10 camera is available at a Suggested Retail Price of S$699. This price includes the camera module, LCD controller and all the accessories mentioned. You will be able to find it at all Casio authorized retailers in Singapore from the end of September 2014.
