Canon's latest Maxify business inkjet printers are faster and more secure

Canon has just added three new models to its Maxify range of business inkjet printers: the multifunction Maxify MB5470 and MB5170, and the single function iB4170.

The Maxify MB5470 is a straightforward, improved version of last year’s MB5370. While its maximum mono print speed in draft mode is still the same at 32.5ppm, it now prints faster in color, hitting a top speed of 26.5ppm. In ISO terms, it’s also faster than the MB5370, at 24ipm (mono) and 15.5ipm (color), vs. MB5370’s 23ipm and 15ipm respectively. First printout time is also shortened to 6 seconds (mono) and 7 seconds (color). These improvements are mainly results of a wider printhead and an overlapping paper feeding technology, where the printer draws the second sheet to be printed and overlaps the first sheet while it’s still printing. Otherwise, the MB5470 is still a 4-in–1 device, with print, scan, copy, and fax functions, as well as support for wired and wireless LAN.

Due to the same print engine, the aforementioned speed improvements are also enjoyed by the MB5170 and iB4170, which once again, are improved versions of last year’s MB5070 and iB4070. Additionally, all three new printers use the Maxify Dual Resistant High Density (DRHD) pigment inks, enabling printouts with high fade, water, and marker resistance. The MB5470 and iB4170 come with two paper cassettes that hold up to 500 sheets, while the MB5170 has a single 250-sheet cassette. For companies that print a lot and are looking to lower printing cost, Canon also offers XL ink cartridges with higher page yields than the standard cartridges.

Once reserved for the highest-end model, a 50-sheet and 2-sided ADF is now found on both the MB5470 and MB5170. Coupled with a twin-scanning sensor, this means 2-sided documents can be scanned in a single pass. Both printers also have a 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD, and an ID Card Copy function that allows users to copy two sides of an ID card or credit card onto a single-sided print, while retaining the original card sizes. Also new is PosterArtist Lite, a custom notice and poster making software that works with the new Maxify models, and which can be downloaded from Canon’s website.

The business-oriented Maxify printers are further equipped with features for managing data and keeping them secured. Users will be able to (depending on model) restrict functions like copying, scanning to USB flash drive, and changing of LAN settings, to guard against inappropriate use and maintain data confidentiality. Support for IP Address Filtering also ensures errant hosts can be excluded from usage of valuable printing resources.

All three Maxify printers also support the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), which allows multi-device management and monitoring via popular fleet management applications, such as Canon’s imageWARE Enterprise Management Console (iWEMC) and PrintFleet. This maintains data security as it allows the transmission of email data via the user’s mail server and it also enables a seamless deployment with larger device fleets. For smaller installation sizes, individual printers can also be monitored over a local network via their Remote User Interfaces (RUI), accessible from any web browser. Also, the Scan to Email function supports Canon’s own cloud service, and adds another layer of security by enabling compatibility with enterprise mail servers.

Of course, these printers support mobile printing as well, which can be done via the company’s free Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY app or through the Maxify Cloud Link or Google Cloud Print services.

The Canon Maxify MB5470, MB5170, and iB4170 are now available at all Canon authorized dealers, at a price of S$459, S$369, and S$219 respectively.
