Canon’s new flagship 1D X Mark II is the fastest DSLR today, with 20MP at 14fps

Updated 6/4/16: Added Singapore local pricing and availability.

Canon has just announced their latest camera, the EOS 1D X Mark II. The 1D X line is Canon’s flagship range of full-frame cameras, with high-performance and rugged bodies for the action photographer.

The 1D X Mark II comes with a new 20.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor, with an ISO range of 100 to 51,200, expandable to ISO 409,600. Dual DIGIC 6+ image processors enable fast speeds and operation, the 1D X Mark II shoots up to 14 frames per second (raw or JPEG), 16fps in Live View mode, and it can capture bursts of up to 170 raw files with a CFast card, in its new CFast card slot.

The AF system has been improved, with 61 AF points, 41 of them cross-type. The center point is able to focus at -3EV with compatibility down to f/8. A new 360,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor and processor helps the 1D X Mark II track subjects for both stills and video.

The 1D X Mark II shoots 4K video (4,096 x 2,160) up to 60fps, with the ability to grab 8.8MP still frames in camera. It can also capture 1080p HD video up to 120fps for slow-motion. The 1D X Mark II features a touch-panel LCD to easily select AF points while the camera is rolling.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF and Movie Servo AF are available in video shooting, for high-speed, high-frame rate and continuous autofocus.

The 1D X also comes with a built-in GPS, for geotagging and auto time syncing with Universal Time Code via satellites. Unfortunately, there is no built-in Wi-Fi, you have to use the optional Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E8A accessory to transfer files wirelessly.

The body is made of magnesium alloy with dust and weather resistance. The shutter is rated for up to 400,000 cycles.

Compare the new 1D X Mark II with our review of the original 1D X, and Nikon’s recently announced D5, which shoots 20MP images at 12fps (with AF and AE). The 1D X Mark II will be available in Singapore in May, at the recommended retail price of $8,199.
