Canon has just announced the PowerShot G1 X Mark III, the company’s first compact camera to pack an APS-C CMOS sensor and a Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology.
The third model in Canon’s premium PowerShot G1 X series, one of the two headline features of the G1 X Mark III is its 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor. For comparison, the 2014 G1 X Mark II only had a puny 12.8MP 1.5"-type sensor.
To “achieve unparalleled high-speed AF” in a compact camera, the Mark III also sports a Dual Pixel CMOS AF system. This is the same AF system we saw on Canon's higher-end DSLRs like the EOS 77D.
The G1 X Mark III isn’t an ILC though, and instead is equipped with a fixed 24–72mm equivalent zoom lens (F2.8 - 5.6). Continuous shooting speed is rated at up to 9fps with AF/AE locked on first shot, or 7fps in servo AF mode. The camera also touts a Dual Sensing IS for shaper stills and smoother videos, even when you’re on the move.
The PowerShot G1 X Mark III also uses the DIGIC 7 image processor, the same engine we saw on Canon’s other ILCs like the EOS M5. Base ISO is rated at 100 and can go up to 25,600.
Other features include a vari-angle touch panel (you can touch and shift focus points even while looking through the electronic viewfinder), a high-res EVF with 2.36 million dots, 1080/60p video capture, and support for Wi-Fi, NFC, and Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity. The camera body is also sealed against moisture and dust. Canon is also making an underwater casing (WP-DC56) that you can buy separately.
Singapore pricing and availability of the PowerShot G1 X Mark III will be advised at a later date. In the U.S., it has a sticker price of US$1,299 and will ship in November.
*Update*
THe PowerShot G1 X Mark III will be available at all Canon authorized dealers from 27 November 2017 for S$1,499.
