Canon launches new cameras for their IXUS and PowerShot line-ups

Slim, elegant options

The IXUS 170 is sleek and elegant.

The IXUS 170 and IXUS 160 are the latest models in Canon’s IXUS range of sleek, sophisticated cameras, and both feature high resolution 20.0 megapixel sensors in an elegant form factor. Also shared, is the ability to double the zoom range of the camera via Canon’s ZoomPlus technology, and the ability to capture HD movies at a cinematic frame rate of 25 frames per second.

The IXUS 170 measures 99.6 x 57.6 x 22.6mm and weighs just 141g, but has a focal length of 25-300mm (35mm equivalent) that extends to 600mm (or 24x zoom) with ZoomPlus applied. It features Intelligent Image Stabilization (IS) to help counter hand shake; helpful at those long ranges when even the slightest of movement of the camera is magnified.

The new IXUS 160 compacts are available in white, red and black.

Meanwhile, the IXUS 160 has a 8x zoom lens that covers from 28-224mm (35mm equivalent). This is again doubled when ZoomPlus is applied, and the IXUS 160 has a slightly brighter lens compared to the IXUS 170 (f/3.2 compared to f/3.6 at the widest), while being slightly smaller and lighter at 95.2 x 54.3 22.1mm, 127g.

The IXUS 170 will be available in Black, Silver and Blue, while the IXUS 160 will feature in Black, White and Red.

Pricing and availability for both cameras is to be announced.

Portability and reach

As for PowerShots, Canon’s new PowerShot line-up looks to fit travelers of every segment, with the PowerShot SX530 HS providing exceptional reach thanks to its 50x zoom, while the PowerShot SX610 HS and PowerShot SX710 HS should appeal to travelers looking more for convenience in a small form factor.

Whether you prefer portability or reach, there's a PowerShot for everybody.

The PowerShot SX710 HS is powered by Canon’s DIGIC 6 processor, and boasts a 20.3 megapixel 1/ 2.3” CMOS sensor with a 25-750mm (35mm equivalent) 30x zoom lens that can be magnified to 60x with ZoomPlus. To help amateurs work at these high zoom levels, Canon has incorporated improved dynamic IS on the PowerShot SX710 HS, allowing it to detect and counter your movements in all five axes, giving you stabilized video no matter if you’re walking or running.

Also on the camera, is the latest version of Zoom Framing Assist, which analyses a shot and adjusts the focal length of the camera accordingly. This function can even detect multiple subjects, zooming out to ensure the entire group is in frame.

Meanwhile, the PowerShot SX610 HS also offers a 20.2 megapixel 1/ 2.3” CMOS sensor with an 18x, 25-450mm (35mm equivalent) zoom lens, but runs on the DIGIC 4+ processor instead. It weighs just 191g, and features a new Auto Zoom mode, which detects the ideal zoom setting for each frame, making it handy when you’re on holiday and have to hand the camera to a passerby to take a photo of yourself.

Coming back to the PowerShot SX530 HS, this 16.0 megapixel camera features a 24-1200mm zoom lens, making it suitable for capturing images of wildlife while on safari, or even a spot of astrophotography. ZoomPlus technology again extends this to an incredible 100x reach with minimal loss of quality, while a DIGIC 4+ processor allows it to capture full HD 30p video clips in MP4 format for easy sharing on social media.

All three cameras are equipped with Wi-Fi and NFC technology for quick and easy pairing, and the cameras work seamlessly with the Canon’s mobile apps, allowing for image capture and remote shooting via smart device. (The PowerShot SX530 HS works with the Canon CameraWindow app while the PowerShot SX710 HS and PowerShot SX610 HS work with the new CameraConnect app)

Once connected to a wireless network, all three cameras will also be able to sync images to the Canon Image Gateway (CiG), which will allow them to be viewed on remote computers and smartphones via the cloud.

Pricing and availability for the PowerShot SX710 HS, SX610 HS and SX530 HS will be announced at a later date.
