Canon EOS M Mirrorless Camera Finally Announced! (Update with Video)

Announcing the Arrival of Canon EOS M

Update: Added a hands-on video preview of the EOS M.

Canon's EOS M large-sensor compact camera is here and the company can finally join the growing mirrorless camera group.

Featuring the same 18-megapixel APS-C image sensor and Digic 5 image processor which the new EOS 650D DSLR houses, it offers Live View autofocus, built-in stereo microphones and is capable of capturing 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution videos at 24, 25, and 30fps. Fundamentally speaking, the Canon EOS M is a condensed version of the EOS 650D.

The Canon EOS M comes in a magnesium and stainless build with smooth lines, and adopts a 3-inch capacitive touchscreen (1,040,000 dots). The touchscreen interface adopted is somewhat similar to the EOS 650D we've demoed, but Canon has mentioned that it would be simplified version of it.

Like the 650D, the EOS M's lenses utilizes the STM (stepping motor) technology, but uses a new camera format on the EOS M. Two new lenses are specifically designed for it and are the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM kit lens and the optional EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. Further to these, the camera has the ability to use the full line of Canon EF and EF-S lenses through the optional Mount Adapter EF-EOS M.

Canon says that the EOS M will probably reach our shores in October, with the local price to be announced. In the US, Canon has revealed that the EOS M and 22mm STM lens kit will cost US$799.99 (S$1008 after conversion). The 18-55mm STM lens will cost US$299.99 (S$378), the mount adapter US$199.99 (S$252) and the new Speedlite 90EX US$149.99 (S$189).
