Canon EOS C100 Firmware Update Boosts Continuous AF for EF Lenses

Canon has released its new firmware update service for the EOS C100 HD camcorder that supports the innovative Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, enabling continuous auto-focusing with Canon’s entire EF lens lineup (not including manual-focus lenses).

First employed in the EOS 70D digital SLR camera, the new AF technology facilitates greater shooting efficiency across a variety of shooting situations. Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF makes use of a newly structured CMOS sensor that captures light information and performs phase-difference detection autofocus simultaneously. While focusing on the EOS C100 is primarily performed manually, the update enables smooth continuous AF, a capability that is particularly beneficial when operating with a small production crew in fast-paced or constricted shooting situations.

The Dual Pixel CMOS AF functionality supports continuous AF with all Canon EF lenses for subjects positioned in the center of the imaging area. Additionally, the complementary use of the contrast signal achieves advanced AF stability that reduces the occurrence of unnecessary image blurring during the process of locking in focus. Also, the inclusion of an AF Lock function expands shooting flexibility through presetting focus, which allows users to set a desired focus distance in advance, and the ability to alter the photographing range or composition after establishing focus.

The firmware update increases the speed of the C100’s One-Shot AF function up to two times, enabling users to focus on a subject located at the center of the screen with the push of a button, a feature that is supported on 1044 EF lens models.

This firmware update service will be made available to users through Canon’s product maintenance centers.
