Canon Announces Two New Ultra-wide Angle Lenses *Updated

Canon users will soon have two more ultra-wide angle lenses options for their EOS DSLR digital cameras – the EF-S10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM and the EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM.

EFS 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM

With an effective range of 16-29mm (35mm equivalent), the EFS 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM supplements the existing EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lenses to offer entry-level users full coverage from ultra-wide to telephoto.

Its exaggerated perspective can be used to create some uniquely dramatic pictures, and the Stepping Motor mechanism (STM) component ensures fast, accurate and silent focusing when taking still images and video. The built-in image stabilisation is smart enough to differentiate between panning and still shots, and Canon says it gives the equivalent effect of a shutter speed four steps faster.

Thanks to the use of aspheric lenses and a UD lens, Canon has also managed to make the lens light and compact while ensuring uncompromised image quality. The EFS 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM is approximately 20% smaller and 38% lighter than the existing EF-S10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens, and shorter in length than the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM kit lens.

EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM

For even better image quality, look to the EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM. Made with 16 elements – including 3 Glass-Molded aspheric lenses and two UD lenses – the EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM is said to produce images that match those of the EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, but with image stabilization.

The aspheric lenses significantly reduce distortion, thus bringing detail to the peripheral areas, while the UD lenses minimize chromatic differences; preserving the accuracy of color tones. A 9-blade circular aperture provides almost round bokeh effects, while the addition of image stabilization offers the lens a four-stop advantage in low light situations.

Being part of Canon’s L series of lenses, the EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM’s lens mount, switch panel, zoom ring and focusing ring have all be constructed to be dust and drip proof, while the lens elements have been coated with fluorine (which repels both water and oil), making it easy to clean with just a dry cloth.

Pricing and availability for both lenses to be announced.
