Boxee's PC Client Bids Its Last Adieu

A month ago, Boxee first mentioned it would kill off its PC client after dishing out its last upgrade for PC users. And it looks like they're keeping their word. With effect from yesterday, Boxee has since withdrew copies of its PC applications from its servers. Boxee's Vice President of Marketing, Andrew Kippen, confirmed that the company will stand by their decision despite receiving some flak from early adopters, according to GigaOM's report

Boxee's move isn't all that surprising, when you consider the recent proliferation of Smart TVs equipped with web browsers and Internet capabilities. From now on, Boxee will focus its efforts and resources on the Boxee Box, manufactured by D-Link. "We believe the future of TV will be driven by devices such as the Boxee Box, Connected TVs / Blu-Rays and 2nd screen devices such as tablets and phones. While there are still many users who have computers connected to their TVs, we believe this use case is likely to decline as users find better alternatives. People will continue to watch a lot of video on their computer, but it is more likely to be a laptop than a home-theater PC and probably through a browser rather than downloaded software", said Kippen.

Apart from Smart TVs, the affordability and availability of connected devices such as media players and gaming consoles may also render the HTPC obsolete in the near future, if it isn't already redundant today. In our opinion, Boxee is only doing what's expected to keep up with the trends. We can't gauge how long they'll survive in the market, but at least they are doing what they can to stay relevant against the likes of Google and their Google TV spawn.
