Bluetooth 5: 4x the range, 2x the speed, and coming to a device near you soon

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has just formally announced Bluetooth 5.0 - the next iteration of Bluetooth technology.

To begin, Bluetooth 5.0 will serve up faster speeds and offer much wider coverage. According to reports, Bluetooth 5.0 will provide up to four times the range and double the speed of Bluetooth 4.0.

More impressively, all this improvements are said to come at no increase in power consumption over the current low-energy Bluetooth 4.0 standards.

The higher speeds could mean wireless speakers that can stream and play music at higher bitrates; while the greater range could mean that your smartwatch would still receive notifications even if you have left your room.

Bluetooth 5.0 would also be more location aware. For example, using special Bluetooth beacons scattered across a warehouse, a warehouse manager could more easily locate items in his or her inventory.

Bluetooth 5.0 would also enable better performing and more meaningful IoT devices.

Mark Powell, executive direction of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group said, "Bluetooth 5 will make beacons, location awareness, and other connectionless services an even more relevant part of an effortless and seamless IoT experience."

Bluetooth 5.0 will be available to manufacturers as soon as this fall, and devices supporting this new standard could arrive as early as late 2016 or early next year.
