Update (September 22, 9:30 AM): BlackBerry is officially 'pausing' BBM rollout for Android and iOS. A reason given is that the leaked Android version (which BlackBerry will be disabling) is causing issues. If you've already downloaded the iPhone version of BBM, you can continue using it. Rollout will continue as soon as BlackBerry is ready, with the Android version adopting a staggered country rollout.

Update (September 22, 12:10AM): BBM is now ready for download on Apple iPhones running iOS 6 and later. It's strange that BBM is not yet available for download on Android devices.

Originally reported on September 19:

BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), an Internet-based instant messaging app found on BlackBerry devices, is going cross-platform. According to the company, BBM will be available for free for Android (4.0 and up) this coming Saturday, September 21, with the iOS version (for iOS 6 and up) to follow the next day, September 22.

With BBM for Android and iPhone, users get to enjoy real-time chat (including multi-party chats through BBM Groups), as well as photo, schedule, and voice note sharing. Each BBM user will have a unique PIN, so there’s no need to give your contacts your phone number or email address. BlackBerry also says BBM Channels will arrive later this year to provide a forum for active conversations between you and other people, brands, celebrities, artists, service providers, communities, and more. BBM Video calling and BBM Voice calling are also planned for, but won’t be arriving in this first version just yet.
