Battery said to be the cause of Note7 fires, findings to be announced on 23 Jan
Samsung is likely to reveal the results of the investigation on the Galaxy Note7 on 23 January and the battery is said to be the main cause of the fires.
According to Reuters, a person familiar with the matter claims that Samsung was able to replicate the fires during its investigation and neither hardware design nor software-related issues could explain the cause of the fires.
If battery is really the main cause, Samsung has a lot of explanation to do. During the early phases of the crisis, Samsung said that it had worked around the clock with its suppliers to ensure the highest quality manufacturing and quality assurance processes were in place, and that after a thorough inspection, they were confident that the battery issue had been completely resolved with another supplier.
The New York Times also reported in mid October that Samsung did not know what went wrong with the Galaxy Note7 as hundreds of Samsung engineers and employees were unable to reproduce the explosions for the first batch and the replacement units. This led to the South Korean government stepping in to assist in the investigations. There were several other speculations on what caused the Galaxy Note7 to catch fire such as skipping critical testing stages to rush the product to market ahead of the iPhone 7, tweaking of the processor to speed up charging, and an aggressive design.
