Bad moon rising: Will HP's Omen spell doom for its competitors?

We like the looks of the Omen, but those sides seem to be pretty thin. We're wondering how sturdy it'll be.

Once upon a time, in the stone ages of computing, there was a company called VoodooPC (not to be confused with the Voodoo line of graphics cards by 3dfx). It wasn't a big company but it was unique for its time, as it was a company that focused solely on creating gaming desktops. With that singular focus, also came a singular line; the Omen. The one and only brand from VoodooPC, the Omen later faded into obscurity as VoodooPC was bought out by HP in 2006.

Fast forward to 2014 and we're just seeing the first appearance of machines with the new GeForce GTX 980M's. Unwilling to let brands like MSI or Alienware dominate the gaming notebook landscape, HP is also throwing its hat into the ring. Like a bokor (that's a Voodoo magician), HP's dredging up things long dead. In this case, it's resurrecting the Omen brand. While the previous entries in the Omen line were all desktop machines, the new Omen is a slim gaming notebook that comes in at just 20mm thick and will weigh only slightly more than 2kg.

The Omen, of which the base model will retail for US$1499, has a 1920 x 1080 15.6-inch display with an Intel Core i7 CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M mobile GPU, plus 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. HP's Omen notebook will come in a slew of configurations, but HP will provide optional upgrades for power hungry users. Users can choose SSDs with larger capacities and even double both its system and graphics memory.

There are still tons of unanswered questions we have about the Omen. Will it come to local shores? When? How much will it cost? Rest assured that once we find out, you guys will be the first to know.

If the Omen excites you and you can't wait to have an 860M in your arsenal, might we suggest an Aftershock XG13-V2? It might not have a foreboding sounding name like the Omen, but it's already available locally for a while now.
