ASUS has revealed a brand new addition to its Republic of Gamers series of gaming laptops. The ROG Chimera is a huge 17.3-inch laptop with specifications that will tear through any game, but the most attractive thing about it is probably its display.
According to ASUS, the ROG Chimera is the first laptop to offer a 1080p 144Hz panel with a 7ms gray-to-gray response time, so you can expect a fluid and butter-smooth experience.
It also features NVIDIA G-Sync technology, which helps eliminate things like stuttering and tearing.
Powering this display is a full complement of high-end hardware, including an overclockable Intel Core i7-7820HK processor and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card. However, it doesn’t appear to utilize NVIDIA’s Max-Q technology, and the chassis actually appears quite thick.
It does come with an RGB backlit mechanical keyboard, so that might account for some of its heft.
Another interesting thing is the integrated Xbox Wireless support, which lets you wirelessly connect an Xbox One controller using Microsoft’s proprietary Xbox wireless technology. This means you should be able to hook up compatible controllers without needing any dongles or adapters.
ASUS clearly expects you to take advantage of this, and there’s even a dedicated key – this sits in an additional row of keys at the top, alongside buttons to mute your microphone or start recording – to take you directly to the Xbox app. The laptop also supports ASUS’ customizable Aura lighting system, for which there’s also a shortcut key to access the controls.
