ASUS releases MG278Q monitor, 1440p TN panel with AMD FreeSync

ASUS has announced the MG278Q, a 2560 x 1440 TN version of the MG279Q IPS display of the same resolution. Both monitors share a common pedigree and feature 27-inch displays, but IPS displays have traditionally lagged behind TN panels in terms of response times, even though they offer better color accuracy.

The MG278Q is therefore targeted at gamers who want an even more responsive panel. The TN panel has the same 144Hz refresh rate, but it now boasts a 1ms response time, compared to 4ms on the MG279Q. Of course, the MG279Q is by no means slow, but the faster response time should do even more to minimize ghosting when whipping around corners in your favorite racing simulator.

It also retains support for AMD FreeSync, so owners of certain AMD cards will be able to enjoy smoother gameplay thanks to the variable refresh rate technology.

Viewing angles are 170° horizontal and 160° vertical, slightly worse than the 178° on the MG279Q’s IPS panel.

The new display shares the same stand and design as the MG279Q. The stand is similarly height-adjustable and can alternately swivel, pivot, tilt, and be attached to a VESA mount.

There are also two built-in 2 watt speakers. Other useful features include a dual-port USB 3.0 hub and the ability to tweak the display’s output with ASUS’ low blue light and GameVisual modes.

While we don’t have a price for the monitor yet, it will probably cost slightly less than its higher-end S$999 IPS counterpart.
