ASUS to preload Microsoft Office apps on its Android smartphones and tablets

Microsoft Office apps will be preloaded on Android smartphones and tablets from ASUS.

ASUS is the latest company to join the growing list of Android vendors to preload Microsoft Office apps on its Android-based smartphones and tablets.

In a press release, both companies announced an expansion of an earlier patent licensing agreement which also will facilitate technology sharing towards the development of new, innovative product solutions.

"This agreement delivers significant value for both companies. Beyond ensuring continued improvements to our products, it opens the door to the kind of collaboration between Microsoft and ASUS made possible only through mutual respect and alignment on intellectual property," said Nick Psyhogeos, president of Microsoft Technology Licensing LLC.

The announcement may not be welcomed by consumers as the preloading of apps may take up unnecessary storage space on their mobile devices. To make matters worse, some apps cannot be uninstalled like the Microsoft Office apps on the Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 Edge which do not have memory card slot to increase storage capacity. This has resulted in the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission suing both Samsung and Oppo for loading their devices with an excessive amount of non-removable software.
