ASUS hints at an NVIDIA mobile GPU that beats the GeForce GTX Titan X

The media frenzy surrounding NVIDIA’s just-announced GeForce GTX 1080 is just beginning to settle, but we may soon be finding ourselves in the middle of another maelstrom. ASUS has just dropped a teaser of an unnamed NVIDIA mobile GPU that is supposedly faster than the GeForce GTX Titan X, Maxwell’s single-GPU king. There’s no telling what card it really is, but it stands to reason that this could be a first glimpse of the GeForce GTX 1080M.

ASUS’s post is infuriatingly sparse on the details, but it did provide synthetic benchmarks scores of the mobile GPU against the enthusiast level cards like the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti and Titan X. In 3DMark 11, the yet-to-be-unveiled card notched a score of around 20,800, a hair more than the Titan X.

One thing to note is that the graph has been scaled to make the difference look marginally larger than it really is. It is sub-divided into 200-point increments, and it looks like the difference between the two cards is actually less than a 100 points. Benchmark scores fluctuate slightly between different runs, and it’s entirely possible that the results might be reversed in a different test run.

While these scores should be taken with a pinch of salt, they're still extremely tantalizing. (Image Source: ASUS)

With that said, these scores – if they pan out – are still mighty impressive. It’s difficult to fathom a mobile GPU that can even come close to a top-end desktop GPU like the Titan X, but that’s not to say we don’t wish that such a card existed.

According to ASUS, the mobile GPU in question was benchmarked as part of an overclockable gaming laptop (no overclocking was done during the benchmark) that rivals even gaming desktops. That sounds a lot like the liquid-cooled ASUS ROG GX700, and it’s anyone’s guess how ASUS is going to top that bit of extravagance. But if you look closely, you'll notice what look like coolant ports in the above teaser image, so it looks like ASUS is retaining at least that aspect of the GX700.

However, this is still a concept design, and ASUS is reportedly still in the midst of tweaking it to be even more powerful. As the saying goes, good things come to those who wait.

Here’s to hoping we find out more at Computex 2016.
